Manga Million: free manga and the AI debate
Shueisha's free Manga Million platform, what it offers and for how long, and why fans argued about AI translation. What is confirmed and what is not.
Manga Million is a free digital platform from the publisher Shueisha, launched on 6 August 2026. It offers about one million pages from nearly 400 titles in more than 100 languages, with no account needed. It also started a debate about AI translation. This page separates what is confirmed from what is not.
What it offers
- About one million pages and nearly 400 titles, free to read, with no registration.
- More than 100 languages, including English, Chinese, Hindi, Arabic, Spanish, French, Turkish, Tagalog, Korean and Polish.
- Around 300 of the titles were translated into other languages for the first time.
- It was launched for Shueisha's 100th anniversary. It is a limited-time service: Japanese press reported that it may run until December 2027, and Shueisha has not set a final date.
The debate about AI translation
Days after the launch, readers noticed that translation, lettering and editing credits on many titles went to Flitto Japan, a company that sells both machine translation and human translation. Shueisha told Anime News Network that AI translation was not used for this project. Readers also criticised that the translators were not credited by name.
Both facts are reported: Shueisha says no AI translation was used, and the credits name a company that also offers AI tools. Nothing public shows which methods were used on which title.
Why it matters for readers
- Official languages are growing. A series you could not read in your language may now have an official edition, so check there first.
- Transparency is what readers ask for: who translated a page and how. A page made by a machine should be labelled as such.
- Credits matter. Human translators want their names on their work.
Where RuneManga fits
RuneManga is a machine translation tool and says so. It translates the speech bubbles of pages you give it, in your browser or in the WebApp, and puts the result in the same bubbles. It is a reading aid for pages you are allowed to read, such as titles on an official platform or your own work. It is not an official release and it can make mistakes. Where an official translation exists in your language, read that first.
