Best free manga translator: your options

Free ways to translate manga and manhwa: a free plan, free credits, a trial, Google Lens and open-source tools, and what each one asks in return.

The best free manga translator depends on whether you want to upload files, read in the browser or run software yourself. RuneManga has a Free plan with 20 free credits a day (claimed on the site) and 30 more at sign-up, Google Lens is free for single images, Torii gives free credits at sign-up, Ichigo Reader has a free trial and open-source tools are free if you can install them.

Facts were checked in October 2026 from each product's own pages. Limits and prices change, so confirm on the product page.

What free usually means

Free is never one thing. It can mean a plan that costs nothing and has lower limits, a one-time bundle of credits, a trial that ends, or software that is free but needs your own computer. Before you pick a tool, ask what runs out, what you give up and where your pages go.

Option 1: A free plan on a website

RuneManga's Free plan costs $0, does not expire and needs only a free account (Google, Discord or an emailed link). You add pages as files, a folder, a ZIP or a pasted image, pick the languages and download the result. It translates with RuneLingua, our own AI translator, on every plan. Every account can claim 20 free credits a day, one per page, and new accounts get 30 more once that never expire; credit packs that never expire and paid plans with monthly credits are on sale now.

Option 2: Free credits

Torii is a full manga translator with an editor, and it gives free credits when you sign up. After that you buy credit packs, and one credit is about one manga page according to its pricing page. It is a good way to test a stronger set of features, as long as you are comfortable creating an account.

Option 3: A free trial

Ichigo Reader offers a free trial without registration, then a subscription. It has an upload page, a Chrome extension and apps for several devices. It suits someone who wants to try a reader-focused service before paying.

Option 4: Google Lens

Google Lens costs nothing and is built into Chrome and the Google app. It translates text in one image at a time and does not re-letter the page. It is a good fit for a panel or a few bubbles, and a tiring one for a whole chapter.

Option 5: Open-source software

manga-image-translator and BallonsTranslator are open-source projects that cost nothing. They run on your own computer or server, so your pages stay with you. The price is setup time and, for good speed, a graphics card. Translation engines inside them may need their own accounts or keys.

How to choose

  1. Decide what you have: files or a folder of pages, or a site you read in the browser.
  2. Decide what you can spare: an account, setup time or money later.
  3. Test one chapter on the tool before you commit to it.
  4. Check the privacy page for how long images are kept.
  5. Keep the original pages, because any online service can change its limits.

Quick answers by situation

  • You have a folder of pages and want it free: the RuneManga WebApp.
  • You want to understand one panel now: Google Lens.
  • You want an editor and are fine with credits: Torii.
  • You want to test a subscription service first: Ichigo Reader's trial.
  • You enjoy setting things up and want everything local: an open-source tool.

What you give up with a free translator

  • Lower limits than paid plans. The cap can be pages, credits or time.
  • A basic translation engine. RuneManga is an exception: its Free plan uses the same translator as the paid plans, RuneLingua.
  • Gaps shared by most tools: text outside speech bubbles and sound effects are hard for every translator, and RuneManga does not translate them yet.
  • Features that sit in paid tiers elsewhere, such as editors and bulk tools.

Questions

Is there a manga translator with no sign-up?

Google Lens needs no account. RuneManga's WebApp needs a free sign-in with Google, Discord or an emailed link, with no card. Torii asks you to sign up for its free credits.

Are free manga translators worse than paid ones?

Not always, but free tiers have lower limits or fewer features. The stages that cost the most to run, such as erasing text cleanly, are usually where limits show.

Do I need to install anything?

Not for the RuneManga WebApp. Open the WebApp in your browser and add your pages. The browser extension installs from the Chrome Web Store or Edge Add-ons in one click.

Do free tools keep my pages?

It varies. RuneManga deletes uploads and results about an hour after the job. Read the privacy page of any tool you try.
