What AI colorization of manga is
Most manga is printed in black and white: ink lines, solid blacks and screentone, the dot patterns that stand in for grey. An AI colorizer looks at that line art and paints in flat colors and shading, so a page reads like a color edition. It guesses: the page holds no color information, so hair, eyes and clothes get the colors the model finds most likely.
That is different from an official color edition, where an artist colors every page by hand. AI colorization is a reading aid, fast and free of effort, but not a replacement for the artist's own colors.
How RuneManga will do it
RuneManga already translates pages: it finds the lettering, erases it, fills in the background and sets your language inside the bubbles. Colorize adds one more step to that same pipeline, and the order is chosen for quality.
- Read the text on the original black-and-white page, where text detection and OCR work best.
- Translate it and erase the old lettering, filling in the background under it.
- Colorize the clean page, so no color bleeds into lettering.
- Set the translated text last, so it stays crisp and uncolored.
You will be able to pick Colorize on its own (color, same language) or Translate + colorize (both in one run). Pages that already have color, such as most manhwa and webtoons, only need Translate: their colors stay exactly as they are.
Where it stands today
Colorize is planned, not available yet. Our own colorizer for manga line art is in development, and Colorize and Translate + colorize will appear in the WebApp once it produces results worth showing. Translate works today and does not use the colorizer.
- The home page shows two sample pages coloured by our colorizer as a preview; more before-and-after pages will follow here once Colorize opens in the WebApp.
- Colorized pages follow the same rules as translated ones: deleted about an hour after the job, never used for training.
- When colorize is available, this page, the app and the plans on the home page will say so.
Questions
Can RuneManga colorize manga today?
Not yet. Colorize is planned, not available yet, while our colorizer is in development. Use Translate for pages you want to read now.
Will the colors match the official color edition?
No AI colorizer can know the official colors from a black-and-white page. It picks likely colors, which can change between pages. Treat it as a reading aid.
Should I colorize manhwa or webtoons?
Usually not: most are already in color. Use Translate and the colors stay untouched.
Why translate before coloring?
Text detection and OCR are most accurate on the original black-and-white page, and coloring a page with the lettering already removed keeps color out of the text.
