Translate Chinese manhua with RuneManga

Chinese manhua with RuneManga: what works today, simplified and traditional text, names and terms, readers and the settings to use.

Manhua comes in many shapes: colored vertical strips, black-and-white pages, horizontal or vertical lettering, simplified or traditional characters. RuneManga reads Chinese as a source language and its quality is still improving, so use the result as a reading aid and keep an eye on names and recurring terms.

What works well

  • Dialogue in speech bubbles on large, sharp images.
  • Colored strips with Translate: the colors stay as they are.
  • Black-and-white pages: the lettering is erased and the background under it filled in.

What does not work yet

  • Short lines placed on the art without a bubble are not translated yet.
  • Decorative titles and sound effects are left as drawn.
  • The same name or rank can be spelled differently from page to page, because each line is translated on its own.

Where you read

  • Chapters saved as images or a ZIP: use the WebApp.
  • Readers that show pages as ordinary images: the browser extension translates them in place as you scroll.
  • Readers that draw on a protected canvas cannot be read by the extension.
  • Mode: Translate.
  • Original language: Simplified or Traditional Chinese, or Auto-detect, which tells them apart by the characters.
  • Input: the largest image you have. Dense characters need pixels, and heavy compression blurs thin strokes.
  • One chapter per job, and keep a short list of names to spot a change in spelling.

Questions

Simplified or traditional: which should I pick?

The one your pages use, or Auto-detect, which tells them apart by the characters. If one of them reads worse for you, tell us which.

Why do cultivation ranks change between pages?

Machine translation can render the same fixed term in several ways. RuneLingua, our own AI translator for manga dialogue, is still learning to keep such terms the same.
