Manga translator browser extension: how it works
Translate the page you are reading in place, only when you ask. What the extension does, what it sends and what it never does.
The extension works today in Chrome, Edge, Opera and Brave, from the Chrome Web Store and Edge Add-ons. A Firefox version is submitted to Firefox Add-ons and is in review.
The RuneManga extension translates manga and manhwa where you already read them. You open a chapter in your browser, and the pages you are looking at are translated in place, so you do not download and upload files. The same engine as the WebApp does the work.
How it works
- Open a chapter on the site you read on.
- Rest the pointer on a page: the RuneManga logo shows in its corner. Click the logo to translate that page, or rest on it to open the page's bar.
- Turn on Auto in the bar to translate every page as you scroll. The first time, the browser asks once for access to that site and to the address its images come from.
- Pick the language you read in the extension's popup, under Translate into. The original language is detected by itself.
- Click the logo on a translated page, or Original in its bar, to switch back to the original and compare.
Translation follows your scrolling
It does not push a whole chapter through at once. Pages close to your position go first and the area moves as you scroll, which keeps it fast and keeps load off the shared servers.
What it sends
Only the manga pages on screen and the ones that scroll into view, to the RuneManga API, and only after you switch it on for that site. Each image goes out under a neutral file name, so it does not send the address of the page or the image's own file name, and it does not send your browsing history or your cookies.
Where it works
- Readers that show pages as ordinary images.
- Some readers draw pages on a canvas; those can only be read when the browser allows it, so they may not work.
- Pages you are allowed to read; the same rights rule as the WebApp applies.
Extension or WebApp
Use the extension to read online. Use the WebApp when you already have the pages as files or want a whole chapter as a ZIP.
