Manga translation editor: fix and reletter pages

Edit translated manga pages in the RuneManga WebApp or right on a site with the extension: retype bubbles, clean up the art, pick fonts and download.

A machine translation gets most bubbles right, but a page is only finished when every line reads well and sits cleanly in its bubble. RuneManga has its own page editor for that last step. It works in the WebApp on the pages you translated, and in the browser extension on an image right on the site you are reading. Your edits stay in your browser, and the editor itself costs no credits.

What the editor can do

  • Text boxes: click inside a bubble and a box fits it, then type the new words. Text can fit the box by itself, and you set the size, alignment, spacing and direction.
  • Styles: colors, outline, a box behind the text, glow, shadow, motion blur and warp. Match original style copies the colors of the lettering under the box, and style presets keep a look you use often.
  • Brushes: Heal fills leftover letters and specks with the colors around them, Erase brings back the original pixels under the brush, and Paint adds a color, a pattern or a blur.
  • Pictures: add an image to the page, for example a sign or a sound effect you drew yourself.
  • Find and replace across the page or every page, for a name that should be spelled the same everywhere.
  • Undo and redo, Show original to compare, and zoom from a full page down to single letters.

Edit pages in the WebApp

  1. Open the WebApp and translate your pages as usual.
  2. Choose Workspace, then switch from Translate to Edit at the top. A page opens for editing once it is translated.
  3. Pick Text and click inside a bubble to fix a line, or use Heal on letters the cleanup missed.
  4. Use Original, Edited and Side by side to compare your work with the source page.
  5. Choose Export to download the edited pages. Your edits are saved in this browser, so you can come back to them later.

Edit an image in the browser extension

  1. Right-click a page image on any site and choose RuneManga, then Edit image.
  2. The editor opens over the page at once: on the translation if the page is translated, else on the original.
  3. On an original, press Translate inside the editor. Boxes and brush strokes you already made stay in place on top of the translation.
  4. Edit the page, then choose Accept. The edited page replaces the image on the site.
  5. With Keep history on, the edit is saved with the page in the extension's History, and Export texts downloads the page's lines as a text file.

Fonts, including your own

The font list has 25 lettering faces in five groups: dialogue, shouts and action, handwriting, effects and narration. Each name is shown in its own face, so you can see the style before you pick it. Under Your fonts you can add a TTF or OTF file, or, in Chrome, Edge and Opera, the fonts already installed on your computer. The browser asks for your permission first.

Your own fonts stay on your device: no font file is uploaded, and a font added from a file is kept until you close the editor. The translation itself is still lettered by the server in one of its four faces; the editor is where you change the font afterwards.

Tips for clean lettering

  • Use Fit text to the box for long lines, then adjust the box rather than the size.
  • Keep one font for dialogue and another for shouts, so the page reads like a printed volume.
  • A thin outline in the bubble's own color helps when the art behind a line is busy.
  • Fix recurring names with Find and replace before you look at single bubbles.

Questions

Does editing cost credits?

No. Credits are spent when a page is translated. Editing, downloading and exporting your edits are free on every plan.

Can I edit a page I have not translated?

In the extension, yes: Edit image opens the original, and you can letter it yourself or press Translate inside the editor. In the WebApp a page opens for editing once it is translated.

Where are my edits kept?

In your browser. The WebApp saves them with your translation history, and the extension keeps them with the page in its History when Keep history is on.

Can I use a font from my computer?

Yes. Add a TTF or OTF file, or allow the browser to list your installed fonts in Chrome, Edge or Opera. Firefox can use font files.

Does the editor work in Firefox?

Yes. Everything works there except listing your installed fonts, which Firefox does not offer to websites and extensions.
